♦ Cut the canvas to the desired rectangular size, allowing a border of at least 7.5 cm (3 in) all around for handling and finishing.
♦ Tape or stitch all four sides to prevent fraying - see Carwas, page 138 for details.
♦ Outline the approximate size and shape of the design with a tested, waterproof indelible ink marker, then draw central horizontal and vertical lines. The design’s center point is where the lines cross.
♦ Using a green fast-drying spray enamel paint, spray paint across the canvas surface to unify any color showing through.
FOLLOWING THE CHART
♦ An original variation of an old Florentine pattern, this design is based on flames and zigzags, the right and left sides mirroring each other. Its motif is uncomplicated as the first row establishes the pattern and all subseąuent rows follow in sequential order.
♦ The chart shows the basie design for this chair cushion and should be repeated
as many times as necessary to cover the canvas.
♦ This pattern can be adjusted to any size or shape desired. As a single motif design, work each row from the*right to left, beginning at the bottom right-hand corner until each horizontal row is completed. Finish the lower half of the stitching first, then reverse the canvas to complete the upper half.
STITCHING
♦ For detailed stitching instructions, see Stitching, page 138.
♦ Use Madeira 6 Stranded Cotton as supplied. Use two strands of Madeira Renaissance Wool doubled. Use Madeira Metallic doubled.
MAKING THE CHAIR SEAT COYER
♦ When following the pattern for a corner seat cover, the finished design needs to be cut into a triangular shape, leaving at least 7.5 cm (3 in) of blank canvas all around for upholstery. Unless you are experienced in finishing a chair seat cover, it is recommended that the bargello chair be completed by a professional upholsterer.
