CANYAS
♦ Cut the canvas to the desired size, allowing a border of 5 cm (2 in) all around for finishing.
♦ Tape or stitch all four edges to prevent fraying - see Canvas, page 138 for details.
♦ Outline the approximate size and shape of the design with a tested, waterproof indelible ink marker. Then draw central and vertical lines. The design’s center point is where these lines cross.
♦ Using a red fast-drying spray enamel paint, spray across the surface of the canvas to unify any color showing through.
FOLLOW1NG THE CHART
♦ This design is a variation of the historical Florentine flame pattem, also known as the carnation pattem. It is a series of zigzag and diamond shapes within a specific outline.
♦ The stitch chart shows the basie design for this firescreen and should be repeated as many times as necessary to complete the example stitched. This pattem can be adjusted to any size or shape desired, the border design shown on the chart being an optional suggestion.
♦ This single motif design is begun from the center point of the design and worked outwards. It is advisable to outline all the motifs desired first, then begin at the bottom and work upwards when filling in the background stitch. When stitching each outline motif, it is helpful to finish one color at a time throughout all the motifs, doing the same with each following color until the motifs are completed.
STITCHING
♦ For detailed stitching instructions, see Stitching, page 138.
♦ Use two strands of Madeira Renaissance Wool doubled. Use Madeira 6 Stranded Cotton as supplied. Use Madeira Metallic doubled.
MAK1NG THE FIRESCREEN
♦ This pattem was designed for an antiąue firescreen, mounted by an upholsterer. Its size can be adjusted to fit any firescreen, with the recommendation that it be fitted into the frame by a professional upholsterer.
