Smoothies, juices and other elixirs are among my f avourite ways to get huge amounts of nutrition into my
body in the shortest amount of time. It really all starts f rom a base of greens, which I'm going to show you
how to create, and then we move on to more ‘next level’ smoothies and drinks that will have you f eeling
superhuman in no time at all. I tend not to use too many superf oods in my f ood recipes, but I love to
include them in my elixir recipes, especially recipes that have a nut milk base. The base of any great
milkshake is good nut milk. My f avourites are almond milk and the slightly sweeter Brazil nut milk. Nut milk is
usually one of the f irst recipes that people learn when coming to raw f ood, but I have a f ew tips f or you
that might help speed things up a little. A note on soaking nuts: I always, always soak almonds because
they are so much more digestible, especially f or people who can f ind themselves with an upset stomach
af ter eating unsoaked almonds. I've f ound that almonds will attract bacteria like no other nut, so af ter
soaking them overnight (about 6 to 8 hours), I like to wash them thoroughly and then use them f rom there.
If I have any lef tover, I'll keep them in the f ridge, even if I've dehydrated them to get them dry again. The
other benef it of soaking is that you start germination, which turns the nut into a truly living thing, so you
benef it f rom all the transf ormation of nutrients that goes on. Let's take a look at green juices and
smoothies f irst… I like to think of green juice as the real, easily digestible nutrient powerhouse. Green
smoothies are also that, but are higher in calories and will sustain you longer, f or example if you want to do
a workout. Having said that, I do know people who have done half -marathons whilst in the middle of a juice-
only week. I think so many people get caught up on wanting to do a green juice ‘right’ that it becomes
too complex. To me a green juice is a juice that is green but sweet enough to enjoy it. A good starting point
would be greens that are f airly mild in f lavour, such as cucumber and spinach, maybe adding in something
with more f lavour, like broccoli, to see how much you can ‘get away with’. The key to this f or me is having
enough sweet ingredients like apple or pineapple to keep it really tasty.
