2    Het waarom van die werkwijze ligt voor de hand.

3    Het doel van de meesten (1) onder u is in de eerste plaats te leren spreken (2).

4    U wenst zich zo spontaan en vlot mogelijk te kunnen uitdrukken, en dat is begrijpelijk (3).

5    We hebben dan ookallerlei onderwerpen uit het dagelijks (4) leven behandeld,

6    zodat u nu in staat bent naar de weg te vragen, een maaltijd in een restaurant of een drank in een cafś te bestellen.

Plans for the Futurę

1    In a first stage it appeared particularly important to us to work almost exclusively with conversations.

2    The 'why' for that procedurę is plain to see (lies at hand).

3    The goal for most among you is, in the first place, to learn to speak.

4    You wish to be able to express yourself as sponta-neously and fluently as possible, and that is under-standable.

5    And so we have dealt with all kinds of topics from daily life,

6    so that you are now able to ask directions [and] order a meal in a restaurant or a drink in a cafe.

7    A good [piece of] advice as far as this last point is concerned:

An -n Is added when the word is used alone referring to people. De meesten zijn klaar: Most (of the people) are ready. De meeste mensen zijn moedig: Most people are brave.

(2)    Te is not used with an infinitive after teren, tk leer haar Nedertands spreken: l'm teaching her to speak Dutch.

(3)    The suffix -(e)ll|k is always unaccented [-(:)l:k]. It is added to nouns or verbs to form adjectives and adverbs. Eer (honour). eerlijk (honourable, honest). Einde (end), eindelijk (finally). Burger (Citizen), burgerlijk (civil). Aanbidden (to worship), aanbiddelijk (adorable). Mogen (to be able), mogelijk (possible).

(4)    Here the adjective does not have -e because the adjective/ noun combination represents a single concept. Hel secundair onderwijs: secondary education. De algemeen secretaris the generał secretary. Waar is het centraal station?: Where is the central station?
