Buying a House

1    — You seem to have worries. [old] boy.

2    — Yes! Each evening for weeks I m busy calculating,

3    and at night I can hardly sleep anymore.

4    — What's wrong (at the hand)?

5    — My wife has a crazy idea: she wants to buy a house

or have one built.

6    — I don’t find that so crazy.

7    — Maybe not! But that's much too expensive for us.

8    — Don't tell me you have no money at all!

OPMERKINGEN

(1)    The infinitive used with schijnen is always preceded by te. He doesn't seem to hear anything: Hij schijnt niets te horen. She seems to have much work: Ze schijnt veel werk te hebben.

(2)    Elke becomes elk before a singular neuter noun: elke dag (each day); eik jaar (each year); elk huis (each house).

(3)    When one is busy doing something. this is often expressed in Dutch with the words zitten te, staan te, or liggen te, depen-ding on one's posturę. Hij zit te werken: He's busy (sitting there) working. Ze ligt te lezen: She's busy (lying there) reading. Ze staan te kijken: They re busy (standing there) watching.

(4)    At night: 's avonds. 's Avonds kijk ik naar de televisie: In the evening I watch television ’s Morgens ben ik om 8 uur op kantoor: In the morning l'm at the Office at 8 o'clock. Notice that the word after 's is capitalized at the beginning of a sentence.

(5)    Cardinal numbers expressing hundreds and thousands are written as one word. Driehonderd: three hundred; twaaltdui-zend: twelve thousand.

(6)    Names of currencies remain singular when preceded by a Cardinal number. Twintig frank: twenty francs; vijftig pond: fifty pounds.
