(4)    Two irregular plural forms: de weide (de wei), de weiden; de koe. de koeien.

(5)    Lijken: look like, seem, appear. Dal lijkt maar zo: That only appears [to be] so. Lijken op: resemble. Ze lijkt op haar moeder: She resembles her mother. Ze lijken op eikaar: They resemble each other.

(6)    After a Cardinal number the suffix -tal means 'a group of (about)'. Whether about' is included depends on the context. Het drietal ging op reis: The three [of them] went on a journey. Verleden week las ik een vijftal boeken : Last week I read about five books. These words are always neuter. Het elttal speelde goed vandaag: The eleven [soccer players] played well today.

(7)    In compound geographical names the -en sufflx of noorden, zuiden, oosten and western disappears. Oost-Berlijn: East Berlin; Zuid-Holland: South Holland (a province); Noord-Amerika: North America; het noordoosten: the north-east; de zuidpool: the south pole. A hyphen is used in geographical names consisting of a proper name preceded or followed by an adjective. No hyphen is used, however, in adjectives derived from such compound names. West-Europa, Westeu-ropees.
