MIRACULA OF LITTLE POLAND EROM THE XIIIth AND XIVth CENTURIES
A STUDY ON THE SOURCES Summa ry
The subject of the dissertation is an analysis of the sources of the oldest notes "de miraculis post mortem” by St. Stanislaus, Hyacinthus. Salome, and Kinga from Linie Poland from the XIIIth and XIVth centuries.
The authoress is interested in Miracula flrst of all as in a historical pheno-menon, i.e., a source describing facts but also a dlrect reflection of concrete historical circumstances which effected iis development, litera ry form, and the naturę of its contents. She is also interested in the social function of Miracula in the period of their creation and in later periody of their Influence. The presentation of these aspects of the source constituted one of the important research postulates.
A wish of recreating the fuli historical context accompanying the creation of the translations of Miracula from Little Poland well-known in our days, reąuired a formal criticism of the source first of all (chap. I—III). Lack of studles in this field, besides the known lack of editorial prefaces in Monumenta Poloniae Histo-rica, makes it nacessary to use the classical questionnałre of erudite criticism supple-mented with modem analysis of the sources. The analysis of the genesis of separate documents allowed the statement about close relationshlp between the creation of the notes and the need of newly developing local cults in Little Poland during the XIIIth and XIVth cent. It also pointed out to the creative circles the literary tra-dition of which gave rise to the known body of Miracula. The mendicant prove-nience of their secondary editions and the evidenced active participation of Fran-ciscan and Dominican monks in the prima ry records of the witnesses' declarations at the tomfas of St Hyacinthus and Salome reveals the connection of this cirde with the main propagators of all four cults in Little Poland (chap. I).
The poasession of sfbundant secondary editions of records of miracles madę it possible to undertake an attempt of reconstruction of prima ry records. The analysis helped in determining both the origins of primary declarations and the func-tionmg of the stable, at least in some periods.
